Sweet Girl

Aquaman's Jason Momoa makes another attempt at action star status with this thoroughly worthless thriller. Directed by first-timer Brian Andrew Mendoza, the wafer-thin plot finds Momoa distraught at the loss of his wife to cancer after the decision by a big pharmaceutical company to withdraw necessary drugs. What follows is an increasingly knotty revenge tale that finds Momoa first on the hunt, then on the run with his teenage daughter (Isabela Merced). The nonsensical action, righteous beat-downs and a confusingly directed car chase are too lacklustre to really entertain, while even Momoa's natural charm falls short. Instead of real plotting and character development, the film-makers lean on a bizarre twist in the third act that renders much of Sweet Girl simply laughable.
