Our Score
This highly acceptable remake of George A Romero's 1968 horror classic sticks close to the events of the original, as a group of people becomes trapped inside a farmhouse by a gang of flesh-eating zombies. However, the masterstroke here is to keep the viewer off-guard by introducing some fresh slants, courtesy of Romero (who updated his own script) and director Tom Savini. Shot in atmospheric muted colours and well acted by Patricia Tallman and Tom Towles in particular, this succeeds thanks to Savini's sure hand - he brings flair, intelligence and imagination to what could have been a thankless task. With great zombie effects and gripping suspense, this is one remake that's better than anyone had a right to expect.
