A spiritual cousin to 2011's The Guard, this small-town caper gets much comedy mileage from its parochial Pembrokeshire setting. Michael Smiley (Kill List) plays a loner who's spent years manning "the quietest tollbooth in Wales". But as his past catches up with him, he recounts a tale of escalating eccentricity and criminality to local police officer Annes Elwy. "How much is true?" she asks. "All of it," he tells her. "So far." Big on charm and character, if a little scattergun of plot, Ryan Andrew Hooper's film plays like a stylishly shot sitcom, with good gags about thorny UK relationships and a strong supporting cast including Paul "Dennis Pennis" Kaye. Best of all is the chance to watch Smiley in a rare lead role as the wry, watchful presence at the centre of his very own shaggy dog story.
