Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Originally titled Boyz in the Wood, the feature debut of music video director Ninian Doff takes the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme as its unlikely starting point. It sees a trio of teen delinquents (Viraj Juneja, Rian Gordon and Lewis Gribben), plus a loner they've been lumbered with (Samuel Bottomley), embark on a Highlands camping expedition, only to find themselves being hunted by a masked aristocrat (Eddie Izzard). For a comedy horror, there's precious little suspense, but if the story and satire feel undercooked there are explosions of anarchic energy and some eye-catching visual gimmicks. Infused with hip-hop beats and swagger (one of the crew is a wannabe rapper with the unfortunate moniker DJ Beatroot), the film's urban influences and Highland setting make for a enjoyable contrast. Given the director's background, it's no surprise that things really fly during a pulsating montage set to the title track, while the police pursuit (led by the wonderful Kate Dickie) adds a dash of ineptitude to the mix in a film that's flamboyantly surreal and often very funny.
