Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Astutely adapting his acclaimed play, Florian Zeller makes a breathtaking directorial debut with his wrenchingly perceptive look at advancing dementia and the toll it takes on those close to the afflicted. Anthony Hopkins is the elderly, proud Englishman suffering memory loss and increasing confusion; Olivia Colman is the concerned daughter trying to balance parental love and care with her own life needs. Zeller's masterstroke is in conveying the experience of a disintegrating mind through distorted realities and dramatic shifts in perspective. The subtle visual tricks and thriller-like twists become a literal representation of the devastating illness. Meanwhile, the cast is perfection: Colman, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell, Olivia Williams and Mark Gatiss add superb nuance to Hopkins's paranoia. But it's Hopkins who is truly astonishing, giving an Oscar-winning performance as the shattered soul slowly capitulating to the enemy inside his own body.
