The haunted house movie gets an uninspired Egyptian twist in
The Pyramid
, where a team of archaeologists find a three-sided pyramid. Once inside, they become trapped in a complex labyrinth designed to keep whoever enters from ever escaping. Danger lies in the darkness in a cynical movie that makes no bones about its intentions. Once the premise is established and the characters are trapped inside, jump scares, gore and "found footage" genre clichés repeat in a process that may trouble the nerves but not the mind. A number of familiar names make up the cast, of which only Denis O'Hare makes any impression as the leader of the expedition, with
The Inbetweeners'
James Buckley also entombed. It's not entirely the ensemble's fault, however, as after a certain point the actors serve only as targets for the shadowy beasts. Overall, this forgettable horror wastes its cast and premise in a lazy pursuit of scares over substance.
Summary
A previously unexplored pyramid is discovered in the Egyptian desert, and a party of archaeologists sets out to uncover its secrets. The explorers soon find the tomb is riddled with deadly traps, but this proves the least of their worries when they realise it was built to contain dark forces that they have now unleashed. Horror, starring Ashley Hinshaw and Denis O'Hare.
