Review

Our Score
This charming comedy combines endearing characters with generous helpings of deadpan humour - and the result is quite wonderful. Set in New Zealand, it tells the story of Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), a 13-year-old delinquent who ventures into the wilderness to avoid juvenile detention. Thankfully, he is tracked down by his foster uncle, Hector (Sam Neill), a grumpy, taciturn mountain man who knows how to survive in the bush. Before long, however, the two of them are forced to become fugitives, as Ricky's disappearance causes a national manhunt. While they try to stay one step ahead of the authorities, Dennison and Neill form a delightful double act, creating a mismatched duo who are utterly joyous to watch. There are a few gags that don't quite land, but so many amusing moments and witty exchanges mean that doesn't matter. To quote Hector, it's magestical.
