This charming comedy from Taika Waititi (
Jojo Rabbit
) combines endearing characters with generous helpings of deadpan humour - and the result is quite wonderful. Set in New Zealand, it follows Julian Dennison as a tearaway teen who ventures into the wilderness to avoid juvenile detention. Thankfully, he is tracked down by his foster uncle Sam Neill, a grumpy, taciturn mountain man who helps him survive in the bush as they try to stay one step ahead of the authorities, Dennison and Neill form a delightful double act, creating a mismatched duo who are utterly joyous to watch. There are a few gags that don't quite land, but so many amusing moments and witty exchanges mean that doesn't matter. As Neill says: it's magestical.
Summary
A 12-year-old brought up in the city is sent to be fostered by the good-natured Bella and her grumpy husband Hec, who live on a farm in rural New Zealand. When tragedy strikes. Ricky runs off into the wilderness, pursued by Hec - inadvertently sparking a national manhunt for the two of them. Comedy adventure written and directed by Taika Waititi, starring Sam Neill and Julian Dennison.
