Our Score
An easy-going romantic comedy with uneven charms, this lightweight affair occupies that small space between John Hughes nostalgia and My Big Fat Greek Wedding vitality. Giving yet another sparkling performance in a middling movie, Anna Kendrick brings her winning appeal to the role of the ex-maid of honour at her BFF's nuptials because the best man, the bride's brother, shamefully dumped her by text. Seated at table 19, the Siberia for other losers the newlyweds felt duty-bound to invite, the motley crew become a makeshift family as they share their peccadilloes and desires and bond over reception adversity. Playing more like a sitcom pilot, the strong acting ensemble - including bickering Lisa Kudrow, self-deprecating Stephen Merchant and pot-smoking grandma June Squibb (who was Oscar-nominated for her ditzy turn in Nebraska) - rise above their comic ciphers with fitful gags and one-liners. But it's the 1980s pop hit cover versions and endearing Kendrick that count the most in this matrimonial malarkey.
