Musical based on the Broadway hit, starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx. A foster child's life changes after accidentally meeting a workaholic tycoon running for mayor of New York.
The 1977 Broadway hit has suffered an overblown 1982 adaptation, a sickly 1999 TV movie and a terrible stage sequel. But a worse fate was to come with this awkwardly updated, misconceived and sloppy remake. Its one saving grace is Quvenzhané Wallis (from Beasts of the Southern Wild) as the afro-haired Annie, who is under the foster care of a benefits-grabbing drunk (Cameron Diaz in a way-over-the-top performance). But the girl finds escape through a photo opportunity for the New York mayoral election campaign of cynical billionaire Will Stacks (a merely adequate Jamie Foxx). Annie and Will help each other find love and family, but, under the haphazard direction of Will Gluck, it all feels like a bit of a wasted effort.
