Coronation Street star Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth, dies at 71

Coronation Street actor Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth, has died at the age of 71. He passed away in Tenerife on Thursday morning. 

A statement from the actor’s family read: “The family of Bill Tarmey have confirmed that he sadly passed away this morning in Tenerife. They have respectfully asked the media for privacy as they grieve for a wonderful husband, father and brother.” 

The production team at Coronation Street added: “The cast, crew and production team at Coronation Street are devastated to hear of Bill's death. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill's wife and soulmate Ali and their family at this very sad time.” 

Tarmey made his debut as lovable rogue Jack in 1979 and played the role for over three decades before leaving the series in November 2010. His final scenes saw Jack dying peacefully in his armchair at home, reunited in his last moments with onscreen wife Vera (Liz Dawn). 

On his departure from the show, the actor said: 

“I’ve had the most amazing 30 years playing Jack. Because of him I’ve made fantastic friends and travelled all over the world. I’ll be sorry to say goodbye.”
