Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Over 100 years since the first appearance of Edgar Rice Burroughs's apeman creation comes this motion-capture cartoon, which grafts some surprising visual nods to Avatar and Jurassic Park on to the basic plot. Young JJ Greystoke accompanies his parents on an expedition in remote Africa to find the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs - and could provide a new source of energy. The boy survives a helicopter crash that kills his family, and is raised by gorillas to become the legendary vine-swinger (voiced by Kellan Lutz). Years later, the evil head of Greystoke Energies resumes the search for the meteorite, threatening Tarzan's animal family. While not of Disney/Pixar animation quality - especially in the appearance of the humans - this lively fantasy packs in enough tropical incident and vivid action to pass muster. The introduction of Jane (Spencer Locke) and the obligatory eco message slow things down a bit, but the pace picks up for the Lost World-inspired climax.
