Last year, it had been announced that the show had been renewed just after the finale had aired. Now though, fans can get that bit more pumped as production on season 7 kicks off.

Along with that news, casting for the new season has also been confirmed – with some impressive and familiar British acting talent joining the ranks for what is set to be another twisty outing of the crime drama.

Heading up the cast for the upcoming instalment is After the Flood and Peaky Blinders star Sophie Rundle, who will star as "troubled social worker Mary Brock".

Joining her is Joan's Kirsty J Curtis as "respected inmate, Lacee Cook" while The Reckoning's Julian Rhind-Tutt stars as "struggling addict, Hugh Swafham" and Trigger Point's Natalie Simpson is "tenacious journalist, Ruby Allenford".

As per the series, each season's new cast intersects with the case in some way, shape or form, with suspicion looming around them all and secrets threatening to come to the fore. According to the series description, this batch of new characters lead present-day lives which "conceal dark secrets" but as for who's hiding what, we'll just have to wait and see.

As for the case itself that returning DI Sunny Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and DCI Jess James (Sinéad Keenan) will be tackling, it will start with "the chilling discovery of human remains in the crawl space of a house in Ladbroke Grove, London".

The synopsis continues: "Early forensic analysis suggests the body is that of a child and has been deliberately concealed for several years. The investigation takes a deeply personal turn for the team when a DNA match links the victim to a previously closed historic case, compelling DI Sunny Khan and DCI Jess James to revisit the original inquiry and unravel the truth behind a decades-old crime."

In terms of what case that'll be and whether it's one that Unforgotten viewers are already familiar with, we'll just have to bide our time and find out.
