Alongside creator and star Gatiss, other returnees to the cast include Polly Walker (Bridgerton), Elliot Levey (We Were the Lucky Ones), Connor Finch (Professor T), Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners) and Buket Kömür (Generation Z).

More details of guest stars for season 2, which will consist of six more episodes, with every two telling a separate story, will be revealed in due course. Filming on the new season will begin this summer.

The first season, which will debut on 16th July, introduces Gatiss's character Gabriel Book, the owner of an antiquarian bookshop in 1946, who helps the police to solve a variety of mysterious crimes.

The synopsis says of the detective: "If his War was packed with espionage and secrets, Book’s Peace is just as full of adventure! Now he helps the police solve the strangest of crimes and the knottiest of murders.

"But his close association to the force is not without its dangers. For although he is very happily married to his childhood best friend, the captivating Trottie (Walker), Book is a gay man living at a time when homosexuality was illegal.

"When Book and Trottie take in Jack (Finch) it seems like an act of altruism: a second chance for a young jailbird. And Jack proves a worthy assistant both in the shop and in Book’s murder investigations. It soon becomes clear, however, that Jack’s appointment wasn’t quite as random as it at first appears…"

A spin-off book for the series, which has been written by Matthew Sweet and is also titled Bookish, will tell the crime stories from the perspective of Kömür's character Nora, and will be released on 17th July.

Bookish will air on U&Alibi from Wednesday 16th July 2025.
