A government raid on a religious community led by David Koresh near Waco, TX led to a 51-day standoff which ended with 76 people dead.
Knowing the outcome of the disastrous Waco siege in 1993 does nothing to diminish the tension in this excellent, intelligent and thoughtful dramatisation. The FBI and its offshoot the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) prepare to raid the Texas compound of the Branch Davidians sect, led by the messianic and seemingly unshakeably confident David Koresh.
But the operation is bungled from the start as an FBI surveillance team is woefully unprepared when Koresh (Taylor Kitsch) pays a “friendly” visit to its lair. Koresh – a bigamist and a sexual exploiter of underage girls – is no fool, and he’s armed to the teeth, ready for the “armies of Babylon” to come to his door. He doesn’t have to wait long.
