Blackouts didn’t just protect Second World War civilians from the perils of overhead bombing raids. All that gloom gave rise to dark deeds of all kinds, most notoriously the opportunities for serial killers. This grisly episode treads a well-worn path as it describes two killers who took advantage of the darkness to prey on women.
In Berlin in 1941, despite the strictures imposed by the Nazi state, a man attacked women on their way home after working late, not only assaulting them, but throwing them off trains for good measure. While in London a year later, a well-spoken serviceman with particularly unpleasant tastes targeted Soho’s prostitutes in a brief but horrid killing spree.
