Neil Young returns to his birth Canadian province of Ontario to revisit his old haunts and to perform in Toronto's vintage Massey Hall.
This documentary about the legendary Canadian rocker intersperses live footage of him on stage in Toronto with scenes of him driving across Ontario on his way to the venue. As he travels through small towns and revisits old haunts, Young recalls boyhood adventures and family functions with warmth and wit, offering some insight into the inspiration for his music. However, director Jonathan Demme spends just a fraction of the film's running time on the "journey", opting instead to concentrate on two gigs that mix Young classics with songs from his then new album, 2010's Le Noise. Young is in fine form on stage, the cameras never more than a few feet away, although the extreme close-ups of the singer's stubble-heavy face from the point of view of his microphone are, arguably, a bit too intimate.
