Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Things are often not what they seem in the cinema of Safy Nebbou, and this adaptation of Camille Laurens's bestseller follows Angel of Mine and Dumas in centring on a misconception. Aspiring photographer Alex (François Civil) thinks he's flirting on Facebook with a chic fashion student named Clara, but he's actually being duped by Claire (Juliette Binoche), a 50-something literature teacher and divorced mother who has reason to be angry with him. As with any catfishing story, a certain suspension of disbelief is required if viewers are to go along with plot twists that err more towards M Night Shyamalan than Alfred Hitchcock. But, as the sometimes dissembling Claire tries to justify her actions to a knowing psychoanalyst (Nicole Garcia), it's impossible not to get sucked into the social media nightmare that unfolds, which is made all the more excruciating by the exceptional performances.
