Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Two best friends from different parts of London find themselves on opposite sides of a gang war in this contemporary drama. Directed by YouTube sensation Rapman (aka Andrew Onwubolu), who narrates through his music, the film looks at youth culture in a way that feels authentic and honest. Stephen Odubola and Micheal Ward's transformation from studious teens to hardened gang members makes for a sobering journey, with performances that draw you in and break your heart. The scenes of violence are haunting, closing in on the moments where bravado and anger turn to fear. Rapman bookends the film with audio montages of grieving mothers, reminding us that while the film is fictional, the issues it addresses are very much rooted in reality. While the action may lead to a predictable ending, Blue Story is a polished film whose message is timely and important.
