Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Directors always take a risk when remaking one of their own pictures, but it would be invidious to compare Sebastián Lelio's English-language "cover version" with his 2013 Chilean original, Gloria. Similarly, there's nothing to be gained from holding up Julianne Moore's eponymous performance against the display that earned Paulina García the best actress prize at Berlin. Such are the deft differences that each picture can be admired and enjoyed in its own right. The scenario may have shifted to Los Angeles, but Moore's Gloria is still seeking a second shot at romance and hopes that the recently single Arnold (John Turturro) is Mr Right. But, while the dancing divorcee is happy to let her children (Michael Cera and Caren Pistorius) live their own lives, gnawing guilt means that Arnold remains at the beck and call of his daughters and ex-wife. The byplay between Moore and Turturro is delightful, but the entire ensemble impresses, along with cinematographer Natasha Braier, who imparts an energy and elegance that is complemented beautifully by the judiciously selected songtrack.
