A young misfit thinks she may have been kidnapped as a child in this US indie puzzler which won the screenplay award at Sundance for first-time writer/director Christina Choe. Versatile British actress Andrea Riseborough turns in a remarkable performance in the title role, wide-eyed and eternally anxious as a small-town loner, who cares for her ailing mother while also creating a fantasy version of herself on social media. However, when she stumbles across a TV interview with two academics whose daughter had been abducted 20 years earlier, Riseborough's significant resemblance to the lost girl has her putting together some missing connections in her own life. While the film's admittedly more of a vignette than a fully rounded narrative, the consequences prove suspenseful but also genuinely compassionate towards these damaged characters yearning for salvation. Arguably, the questions prove more intriguing than the answers, but Steve Buscemi and J Smith-Cameron also make their mark alongside Riseborough's indelible turn as the story's antihero. Don't be put off by the screen ratio starting off in boxy 4:3 because it widens out later for dramatic effect.
