Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Award-winning documentary-maker Jennifer Fox draws on her own childhood experiences for her devastating feature-film debut. Laura Dern gives a wonderfully nuanced performance as Jennifer, a journalist whose comfortable life is shaken to the core when her mother (Ellen Burstyn) unearths an old story that she penned as a teenager. But it soon transpires that her 13-year-old self's account of idyllic times at a riding school in the company of charming Mrs G (Elizabeth Debicki) and sports coach Bill (Jason Ritter) obscures a shattering truth, and impels Jennifer to investigate the reliability of her memories. Shockingly candid and intensely personal, Fox's testament switches seamlessly and powerfully between the rose-tinted innocence of the young Jenny (Isabel Nélisse) and Dern's dawning in-the-moment recognition that her past conceals horrific abuse. Don't expect pat answers here, even when Jennifer confronts the perpetrator in a skin-crawling climax. Just be prepared to be challenged.
