Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

With its youthful cast and keen ear for dialogue, Eighth Grade is more convincing than most teen movies. Elsie Fisher plays Kayla Day, a 13-year-old girl who records self-help videos on subjects like "Being Yourself" or "How to Be Confident" in her spare time. In reality, though, Kayla is quiet, nervous and socially awkward, which leads to lots of embarrassing, cringe-worthy situations. In some ways, the story is relatively uneventful, but the feature debut of writer/director Bo Burnham brims with relatable situations that capture the teenage experience to a tee. Fisher's delightful, naturalistic performance in the lead makes it all the more endearing.
