Summary

Ten years after the Pan Pacific Defense Corps unleashed an army of Jaegers - 25-storey tall robots operated by mind-melded humans - former pilot Jake Pentecost is contacted by estranged sister Mako Mori. She implores him to return to the PPDC to head off the threat posed by Liwen Shao, chief executive of Shao Industries, who intends to replace the Jaegers with unmanned drones. Haunted by ghosts of the past, Jake eventually agrees to mentor a 15-year-old cadet called Amara, whose family were crushed to death during one monster attack. Director Steven S DeKnight's literally blockbusting sci-fi sequel, starring John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Tokyo gets trashed again in this disjointed sequel set a decade after the events of the original Pacific Rim. John Boyega plays scammer Jake Pentecost, the son of deceased Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), who is avoiding jail by training new robot-pilot cadets alongside Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood, doing an ace impersonation of dad Clint). Just in time too, because rogue Jaegers are on the destructive rampage, all part of a Kaiju resurrection masterplan to end the world. With its Transformers knock-off spectacle, this scrappy extravaganza might look a little like Thunderbirds in places, but once the gargantuan battles begin, it delivers the expected city-smashing action. Sure, it's repetitive and the monster mayhem makes little sense, but as mindless junk movies go, this easily punches above its weight.
