Super Troopers 2

This belated sequel to the 2001 cop comedy sees comedy troupe Broken Lizard return to play the calamitous quintet of Vermont state troopers, here tasked with policing a French-Canadian town transitioning to US sovereignty. The original featured a combination of lowbrow humour and charm, though the latter seems to have receded over time. Putting all of its faith in crude gags and cultural misunderstandings, the plot is low down on the list of priorities as the viewer is bombarded with jokes about genitals and Canadians. There are enough funny moments and clever cameos to keep proceedings from feeling like a complete disaster, with Rob Lowe's appearance as a Canadian mayor proving one of the highlights of the film. However, too often this follow-up seems to be merely mimicking its predecessor rather than building on its appeal. While it may offer a few laughs to devoted fans, Super Troopers 2 feels too dated to rise above anything other than noughties nostalgia.
