Our Score
Far from a treasonous reboot of a beloved five-film franchise produced in an era - the late 60s and early 70s - when such things were less of a studio reflex, the 21st century Planet of the Apes cycle, running to three instalments, has merits of its own. This titanic third and final chapter, the second to be helmed by co-writer Matt Reeves, approximately retools Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973). Here, the intelligent simian tribe led by Caesar (third outing for a motion-captured Andy Serkis) aims to relocate to a promised land, abandoning a forest outpost infiltrated by the paramilitary troops of Woody Harrelson's genocidal, Kurtz-like Colonel. (Cross-species antipathy is summed up by a grunt's Vietnam-styled helmet scrawled with the words "Monkey killer".) Reeves and co-writer Mark Bomback introduce allusions to fascism and slavery, with mutant humans in chains and subjugated apes referred to as "donkeys", before a spectacularly pyrotechnic battle between two armies brings the saga to a close. Operatic in scale, laced with connections for old-school fans and especially cinematic in the snow, War leaves nothing out there on the pitch, and even hints at another chapter.

Premiere. A devastating conflict erupts between humans and intelligent primates in a post-apocalyptic future. The leader of the apes is determined to make peace and prove his people are not savages - but a tragic course of events leaves him wrestling with a desire for revenge. Sci-fi adventure sequel, the conclusion of the trilogy of prequels to the 1968 movie. Starring Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn.
