Mark Wahlberg plays his usual blue-collar everyman in a sometimes thrilling but largely by-the-book account of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and seriously injured many more. Wahlberg plays a beat cop who heads the streets-wide hunt for the bombers in a Boston on lockdown. Kevin Bacon lends his support playing an FBI agent, although he butts heads with police commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman, who's never one to pussyfoot around). Rather too much time is spent on the flight of the bombers as opposed to the tense situation that develops once they've been located and in the build-up to what we know is about to happen, so the pace lags at times. On top of that director Peter Berg (who worked with Wahlberg on the real-life Taliban drama Lone Survivor) can't resist a bit of flag-waving and "Boston Strong" sentiment in the finale. However, that aside, this is old-fashioned, no-frills action film-making, the sort of efficient macho-minded entertainment that Berg is good at.

A police sergeant appointed to security duty for the 2013 Boston marathon gets caught up in the aftermath of the bombing. He is drawn into the FBI investigation into the attack, and joins survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they flee the city. Fact-based drama, starring Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan, JK Simmons, Kevin Bacon and John Goodman.
