At the start of this apocalyptic drama, we discover that Earth has just been hit by an asteroid. As a result, a wall of fire is surging around the globe, meaning that life as we know it is about to end. The story takes place in the suburbs of Australia, where a man named James (Nathan Phillips) is planning to spend his final hours at a wild, hedonistic house party. As he is driving there, however, he witnesses young Rose (Angourie Rice) being abducted, which is something that he can't ignore. After saving her, James has to reshape his priorities as he shepherds Rose through the anarchy on the streets and deals with some incredibly bleak situations, most of which are genuinely affecting. The plot might suggest a large-scale epic, but
These Final Hours
emerges as an intimate film about the end of the world, with strong performances and compelling direction.
