Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

First filmed by Franco Zeffirelli in 1981, with Brooke Shields in the lead and featuring the film debut of Tom Cruise, this tale of obsessive teenage love has been significantly toned down for today's youth audience. Gabriella Wilde plays Jade, a white-collar "good" girl, while Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) is David, a blue-collar, mildly "bad" boy. They fall madly in love, much to the dismay of Jade's protective dad (Bruce Greenwood), who does his darnedest to keep them apart - with near-tragic consequences. Shana Feste's film is as cornily trashy as they come, but kind of fun if you're in the right mood for some undemanding candyfloss or a good old emotional wallow.
