Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Charlie Cox stars as Carter, a lonely, homeless Londoner whose chance encounter with his ex-girlfriend's brother (American actor Paul Schneider) throws him into a night of - what is intended to be - comedy chaos. A kidnapped baby and a woman he barely knows (Jodie Whittaker) threaten to derail his efforts to get his life back on track, but despite some charming moments, the film never seems convinced of its own premise. A flaky script by first-time writer/director Anthony Wilcox is comprised of a series of unfortunate and increasingly unbelievable events, not helped by ham-fisted metaphors to punch through its points. All this makes for a tedious watch, and Cox seems uncomfortable in the lead - only appealing in his scenes with Whittaker, thanks to their cute chemistry. Schneider and Christian Cooke (Cemetery Junction) provide amusing but often redundant support as Wilcox never follows through on flashes of promise. Instead he hurries to an indifferent conclusion, ultimately making Hello Carter quite forgettable.
