Actor Charles Lawson is to make a Coronation Street comeback later in 2014 when he returns as fiery hard man Jim McDonald.

Soap bosses are keeping storyline details under wraps but Liz's (Beverley Callard) ex will still be serving time for armed robbery and viewers will get to see more of his life behind bars.

In a statement, ITV said today: "How Jim's return will affect son Steve and ex-wife Liz is still under wraps, but it's safe to say that whenever Jim's around things tend to get a lot more complicated for the McDonalds."

During this original time in Weatherfield between 1989 and 2000, Jim McDonald was involved in a number of high-profile storylines that saw him attack wife Liz, have a one-night stand with hairdresser Fiona Middleton (Angela Griffin) and injure himself after falling from scaffolding.

Charles Lawson was last seen on Corrie in 2011 when Jim was imprisoned after his attempts to rob a building society to give Liz enough cash to buy the Rovers Return backfired. Now, the actor will return to the soap in June, with his first scenes expected to air later in the year.

You can see hot-headed Jim in action in this scene from 2000 that saw him confront evil drug dealer Jez Quigley:
