Doctor Who: Worlds in Time online game launches today

New free-to-play, browser-based, multiplayer game is available to preview now

Whovians will want to get themselves over to pronto as a new online game, Doctor Who: Worlds in Time, based on the TV series, goes on open preview launch from today.

The game, developed by BBC Worldwide Digital Entertainment and Games and Three Rings Design, Inc, is a new browser-based, free-to-play, online multiplayer game – and the first game of its type to be based on the hit science-fiction show.

During play, gamers create Who-themed avatars and band together to complete missions set by a mysterious Time Lord, during which they’ll explore iconic locations from the series like Skaro, Messaline, New New York and The Library, and do battle with the show’s monsters, including the Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping Angels.

“As a huge Doctor Who fan, the chance to develop this game with BBC Worldwide was a dream opportunity,” said Daniel James, CEO of Three Rings.

“We’ve worked to provide Doctor Who fans [with] an experience that matches the quality and imagination of the TV show, and a forum to introduce casual gamers to this remarkable world with an experience accessible to players of all levels.”

While the game is free to play, gamers can choose to purchase in-game items called Chronons, which will help them complete missions and enhance their experience of the game.

Doctor Who: Worlds in Time will launch commercially in early 2012.
