Steven Knight says Taboo season 2 with Tom Hardy could still happen, nine years on
The dark period drama first aired back in January 2017.
It's been almost exactly nine years since Taboo debuted in BBC One, telling a grim period tale starring Tom Hardy that immediately captivated audiences.
Ever since then, there have been rumblings about a second season being produced, but nothing has come to pass. One may come to think there's no hope of the series being revived.
However, as we caught up with Taboo's creator exclusively for our video interview series The Radio Times Writers' Room, in which we get to know what makes screenwriters tick, we asked the man himself whether there was still any chance of a season 2.
"Well, Tom and I have talked about it, and I think we know what we would do," he said. "It’s just finding the space. But I'd love to, I get asked about it – especially in the States, actually – I get asked about it a lot."

This follows numerous comments by Knight in previous years suggesting production could get started soon. Back in 2022, he said that he expected production to start towards the end of 2023.
"[Tom and I] are both keen to continue and there are lots of people who want us to continue in that direction. It’s been a question of schedules and deciding where it goes next," he said.

In March 2023, executive producer at FX Dean Baker said that he, Knight and the rest of the team behind the programme were "currently" working on season 2 – but it seems Knight's many other projects such as House of Guinness, A Thousand Blows, Peaky Blinders and a little thing called James Bond 26 may have slowed progress.

Knight spoke about all of these projects in his interview for The Radio Times Writers' Room, as well as his early work in comedy, his two Dickens adaptations and his creation of iconic quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
