With seasons 1 and 2 of A Thousand Blows being filmed back-to-back, there was obviously never any doubt that the boxing drama was returning for more when the series initially premiered back in February 2025. But now that fans have had both instalments of the Steven Knight series, what does the future hold for A Thousand Blows?

The series initially followed a band of female criminals, a pair of best friends newly emigrated from Jamaica and a dangerous gangster. However, with the events of season 1 seeing death, betrayal and deceit, things only got darker for Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby), Forty Elephants leader Mary (Erin Doherty) and bare-knuckle boxer Sugar (Stephen Graham) in season 2.

This second season was equally as dramatic, leaping forward in time when the dust had partially settled and picking back up with our leading trio, who are all forging their own paths. The finale was certainly explosive, involving stolen paintings, explosions, guns and America.

With some exciting plans ahead for our characters, things seemed to end on a great note for everyone. But can we expect more of the series? Read on for everything we know so far about a potential A Thousand Blows season 2.

Will there be an A Thousand Blows season 3?

As of now, Disney Plus has not renewed A Thousand Blows for a third season.

While the series has proven popular, series creator Steven Knight may be more than a little tied up with other projects seeing as he's working on the third season of SAS Rogue Heroes, Peaky Blinders and the upcoming James Bond movie, which he is writing the script for.

So, it may be a little while before we see the return of the series, especially balancing the schedules of the cast but watch this space.

Who could return for a potential A Thousand Blows season 3?

Things left on a positive note for all three of our leads, with the future seeming to be bright for Hezekiah and Mary who left London together for New York. The last we saw of them was as they sat and smiled overlooking Manhattan Bridge, with Hezekiah proudly holding a leaflet for his upcoming fight.

If a third season of A Thousand Blows was to happen, we'd assume it would unfold in New York with new characters, stories and enemies to look forward to. So, we could potentially anticipate a larger new cast but would assume that both Erin Doherty and Malachi Kirby would reprise their roles as Mary and Hezekiah respectively.

Seeing as Mary doesn't want to leave the Forty Elephants for too long and has only appointed Alice (Darci Shaw) as the temporary leader, it may be the case that Mary could send for her gang to join her or that she could return to London for another job. Either way, we'd certainly expect to see more of the Forty Elephants. As Sophie Lyons (Catherine McCormack) was double-crossed by them also and is in New York, we very well could also anticipate her villainous return.

As for Sugar, the threat of the Elephant Boys remains but things seemed repaired between Sugar and his brother Treacle (James Nelson-Joyce). As for whether we'd continue to follow the story of the Goodson brothers, we'll just have to wait and see.

The cast we'd expect to see in a potential third season of A Thousand Blows is as follows.

  • Malachi Kirby as Hezekiah Moscow
  • Stephen Graham as Sugar Goodson
  • Erin Doherty as Mary Carr
  • James Nelson-Joyce as Edward 'Treacle' Goodson
  • Hannah Walters as Eliza Moody
  • Darci Shaw as Alice Diamond
  • Morgan Hilaire as Esme Long
  • Jemma Carlton as Belle Downer
  • Caoilfhionn Dunne as Anne Glover
  • Nadia Albina as Verity Ross
  • Catherine McCormack as Sophie Lyons

What could a potential A Thousand Blows season 3 be about?

As previously mentioned, we could assume that the series will either follow Hezekiah, Mary and the Forty Elephants in New York in their new life with new characters and villains or that we could return to the East End. If the latter happens, we'd anticipate that Mary would return to the UK having forged new connections with some American counterparts, ready to bring even more wealth the way of her gang.

However, leaving Alice in charge was a surprising move for Mary, not least because the likes of Eliza may have seemed more of a natural move. We could anticipate some tensions rising in the Forty Elephants if Alice's leadership doesn't go down well and so, the group may be fractured.

As for Hezekiah, he acquired the land in Jamaica after his monumental fight win but gifted it to Alec's family and decided to move to New York, bringing Mary along with him. Having fought Nathaniel Washington (CJ Beckford) and been accepted into his group, we're sure that dynamic may present its own challenges, as well as navigating living in the US.
