Our Score
The boisterous back catalogue of militantly Scottish folk-pop duo the Proclaimers - brothers Craig and Charlie Reid - forms the backbone to this often irresistible Edinburgh-set musical, the follow-up to actor-turned-director Dexter Fletcher's low-key debut Wild Bill. Based on Stephen Greenhorn's hit stage play, it tells the story of two soldiers, played by George MacKay and Kevin Guthrie, who return to Leith after a traumatic tour of duty in Afghanistan. Back home, the pair try to rekindle their love affairs (with Antonia Thomas and Freya Mavor), while MacKay's mother and father (Jane Horrocks and Peter Mullan) are forced to confront a long-buried secret. Elegantly balancing poignant drama and broad comedy, Sunshine on Leith adopts the Mamma Mia! formula in that the songs are interpreted by the actors using their own voices, creating an effect that's immediate, intimate and heartfelt. The music may not suit all tastes but the charismatic characters will, in a study of family life that's raw, romantic and real.
