This doesn't sound like much: a middle-aged stereo salesman unwittingly betrays his lack of sexual experience and his colleagues decide to help him lose his virginity. But there's something about this comedy that transcends the mundane and - inevitably - raunchier aspects of the plot. Maybe it's the sharp script, co-written by director Judd Apatow and Steve Carell. Maybe it's the equally sharp comic playing of the cast headed by Carell (Anchorman, Evan Almighty and the US version of The Office), who's rather appealing as the hapless innocent. This will probably appeal to fans of the Farrelly brothers - there's an excruciating chest-waxing scene to rival Ben Stiller's zip malfunction in There's Something about Mary - but the film is sweet, too. If you're in the mood for some superior tosh, this break-out comedy hit could fit the bill.

A middle-aged shop worker reveals he has never been intimate with a woman, which prompts his shocked colleagues to set him up with a series of potentially passionate dates. When he falls for a single mother, his friends think he is right on course for a lusty liaison, but his new partner is not ready for a physical relationship. Judd Apatow's comedy, starring Steve Carell, Catherine Keener and Paul Rudd.
