Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Gladiator meets The Ten Commandments - or at least that's the intention - in director Ridley Scott's slog through the Old Testament. Despite the best CGI money can buy, this grand-scale adventure lacks the awe of those pious epics of yesteryear thanks to its laughable script and camp performances. Only Christian Bale makes his mark in the role of Moses, who is exiled from Egypt by friend-turned-enemy King Ramses (an unconvincing Joel Edgerton in thick eyeliner) and meets God (controversially depicted as a petulant juvenile). Ten spectacular plagues and the Passover later, the new prophet leads his people to the Promised Land through a low-tide Red Sea. The excitement is dampened by a draggy middle where Moses gets married and a tedious epilogue, but Scott's keen ability to explain scripture miracles in credible terms is a major asset.
