Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Hailee Steinfeld steals the show as Nadine, an awkward teenager negotiating life without her dad, a manic family life and unrequited crushes. Perfectly capturing the often agonising teenage experience, the film's script is intelligent enough to balance coming-of-age clichés with a modern perspective. Nadine's misadventures (bad dates, worse parties and clashes with her mother) generate sympathy thanks to the quirky charisma of the young star, as well as the supporting cast. Chief among the film's strengths is the begrudging friendship between Nadine and her weary, sarcastic teacher (played brilliantly by Woody Harrelson). The pair have fantastic comic chemistry. Making the teen comedy formula feel fresh is no easy feat and director Kelly Fremon Craig's complex perspective on growing up feels more authentic than most. While it is definitely geared more towards the social media generation, anyone with bittersweet memories of school life will laugh and wince in equal measure.
