Our Score
A trio of Detroit delinquents attempt to burgle a blind man's isolated house in a superior shocker from Fede Alvarez, director of the Evil Dead remake. But their victim is a steely Gulf War veteran who will stop at nothing to protect his territory and has his own secrets to hide, down in the cellar. Drawing on genre favourites such as Wait until Dark and The Strangers, Alvarez keeps the terrifying twists and nasty surprises escalating, playing cleverly on sightlessness and hitting every wrenching suspense cue with a thrilling deft assurance. Avatar's Stephen Lang is exceptionally intimidating as the clueless thugs' far-from-feeble easy mark. When his own perverse agenda is revealed as his sketchy assailants are unmasked, sympathies shift, unsubtle political context rears its head, tensions coil and the intensity builds towards an effective and chilling climax. Gruesomely visceral and startlingly vicious, this is mainstream horror at its best.
