This visually striking but sombre drama focuses on a small group of children making their way through a ravaged Germany in the months after the collapse of the Third Reich. But it is more than a gruelling study of survival, for these children have been brought up to believe every grotesque lie the Nazis told and are now confronted with the appalling truth. After her father and mother are arrested by the Allies, 14-year-old Lore (Saskia Rosendahl) is left to care for her younger siblings. They set off for their grandmother's house in Hamburg, a long journey that will bring the war home to them for the first time. In constant fear for her siblings as well as herself, Lore is also wary of - and perhaps attracted to - the young Jewish man (Kai Malina) who rescues and befriends them. Australian co-writer and director Cate Shortland gets astounding performances from a very young cast in a film that is quietly shocking and offers no comforting answers.
