Jim McDonald's (Charles Lawson) death in Coronation Street is set to have huge repercussions for another Weatherfield family within the coming weeks.

Last month, Radio Times revealed that the legendary character would be killed off, off-screen, in scenes that would leave son Steve (Simon Gregson) conflicted about his passing.

These episodes have begun to play out on screen, and Cassie Plummer's (Claire Sweeney) plans to propose to Steve will be scuppered next week when news reaches the family that Jim has died.

It's understood that wife Liz – who moved to Spain to live with their son Andy (Nicholas Cochrane) in 2020 – is not due to return for a funeral, as actress Beverley Callard has swapped soaps to star in Irish serial drama Fair City.

Now, Radio Times can exclusively reveal that his passing goes on to unearth one of landlady Maggie Driscoll's (Pauline McLynn) deepest secrets.

Back in the 1980s, she had an affair with Jim, and they had son Ben (Aaron McCusker) together.

This comes after a flashback episode which revealed she didn't have the smoothest of relationships with her late husband Alan, who she accidentally knocked down a staircase to his death.

Did Alan know of her fling with Jim?

Last year, shortly after her arrival, Maggie was spooked by something that she saw in Ken Barlow's (William Roache) sideboard, suggesting that she's known about the close connection to her new neighbours for quite some time.

Steve has grown closer to Ben in recent weeks, much to the frustration of his best pal Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine). Ben even drove his new mate to the hospital in today's episode, though he declined the opportunity to visit Jim.

What impact will this have on Maggie, and could it lead to resentment from Ben?
