The series, currently going by the working title Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards, has been in development for a year, and is the first collaboration between 5’s factual and scripted commissioning teams.

A first-look image for the series has now been released, revealing that Doc Martin star Martin Clunes will be playing Edwards.

According to 5, the series will explore "the newsreader’s double life as it spirals out of control, leading him to make the greatest announcement of his career – his total exit from public life following his conviction for serious child sexual offences".

Edwards pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children back in 2024, with the former broadcaster given six months' imprisonment suspended for two years and required to complete a sex offender programme.

Announcing the series, 5 called the new commission an "unflinching drama" and a "complex, emotional and nuanced portrait" of the scandal surrounding Edwards.

It added that it will "build on extensive factual research over the past 12 months, including extensive first hand interviews and co-operation from those at the heart of the scandal and exclusive access to The Sun newspaper’s award-winning investigation into Edwards".

Ben Frow, chief content officer for 5, said in a statement: "This is an important and shocking story – of how a man in a position of power and trust betrayed that status.

"By gaining exclusive access to the key individuals involved and those who investigated the story, we explore the human cost behind the headlines. As a close collaboration between 5’s factual and scripted teams this is a first for the channel."

The series has been directed by Michael Samuels (The Trial) and written by Mark Burt (Coronation Street). A release date has yet to be confirmed.

Elsewhere, Clunes will next be seen Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Wuthering Heights alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, which arrives in UK cinemas on 13th February.
