Will there be Betrayal season 2?
All four episodes of the Shaun Evans spy thriller are now available to stream on ITVX.

*Warning - contains spoilers for all four episodes of Betrayal.*
Shaun Evans's latest series, Betrayal, sees him play John, an MI5 agent dealing with both personal and professional crises, and all four episodes are now available to stream on ITVX.
The thriller series also stars Romola Garai and Zahra Ahmadi in central roles, and follows John as he uncovers a threat on UK soil involving a hardline faction of the Iranian regime.
The first season brings this storyline to a close, but sees John and his wife Claire still unsure as to how they move forward as a partnership. So, will we get to see how that plays out, and follow John on another mission?

Will there be a Betrayal season 2?

We don't yet know whether Betrayal will be returning for a season 2. The plot of the first season was pretty much entirely wrapped up, but that still doesn't mean we couldn't see John getting involved in more investigations, while still trying to hold his home life and his marriage together.
Speaking exclusively with RadioTimes.com, Evans has suggested that we could see a second season if audiences respond well to the first, but it certainly wasn't the team's intention from the outset to make a returning drama.
"We set out to make a four-parter which was strong and felt like it had no filler, that it wasn't hanging around, that it was tight and concise, and that the story was really strong," he explained. "And then you offer that to the world, and if there's an appetite for more, then we will get together and discuss whether there's more story to tell.
"But it wasn't like, 'This is a brilliant setup for running and running and running'. I think you’re on a hiding to nothing if you do that. To me, it feels quite cynical."
For now, we will just have to wait for any news regarding the show's future, and we will make sure to update this page to reflect any announcements as and when we get them.
When would a potential Betrayal season 2 air on ITV?

If Betrayal were to return for a season 2, then we might be in for a bit of a wait. Speaking with RadioTimes.com, Evans revealed that he first started having initial conversations about this first season five years ago, meaning it took a long time to get to the screen.
Of course, now that the series is up and running, a second season would no doubt be possible to produce at a quicker speed, but given that Evans has been clear there are no immediate plans for a follow-up, it could still take a while as development and writing would need to take place.
We'd imagine that a 2028 release date may seem likely, or perhaps late 2027 at the earliest. However, for now we will just have to wait and see.
Who would return to star in a potential Betrayal season 2?

If Betrayal were to return for a second season, then we would certainly expect Shaun Evans to be back as the central character, John Hughes, while Romola Garai would also likely be back as his wife, Claire.
We could also imagine John's colleagues, including Zahra Ahmadi's Mehreen and Nikki Amuka-Bird's Simone, returning for season 2 - but of course, this is all currently speculation.
Here's a full list of the central characters we would expect to return for a Betrayal season 2, if one is commissioned:
- Shaun Evans as John Hughes
- Romola Garai as Claire Wardly
- Zahra Ahmadi as Mehreen Askari-Evans
- Nikki Amuka-Bird as Simone Grant
- Gamba Cole as Rudy Kember
- Matthew Tennyson as Greg Taylor
