Welcome to Uglyville, the dumptown home of misshapen rejects from the local doll factory. Moxy (Kelly Clarkson) is a curvy pink blob who believes in an outside "Big World" where a child exists for every doll, no matter how ugly. Her faith is faltering, though, so she ropes in some adorably unattractive pals in order to explore the great "outside". However, the quasi-fascist denizens of the factory's creepy Institute of Perfection, where dolly differences are frowned upon, have other ideas. UglyDolls tackles issues of self-image, body shaming, and pressures on appearance, although they sometimes gets lost amid the complexities of the storyline - and some less-than memorable songs. Certain scenes may scare more sensitive children but, on the whole, UglyDolls is cutely done, and it earns extra plaudits for being an animation for younger kids that attempts to address age-relevant issues of individuality.
