Our Score
Combining stunning vistas with intimate insights, Jennifer Peedom's compelling account of life on Mount Everest is an astute appreciation of the Sherpa existence and their value to a $350 million business that often takes them for granted. Her intention is to follow veteran guide Phurba Tashi Sherpa on a record-breaking 22nd ascent of the world's highest peak during the 2014 season. But, as Phurba's wife worries about the treacherous conditions that claimed her brother during the previous climbing season, and journalist Ed Douglas and tour operator Russell Brice discuss how things have changed since Tenzing Norgay accompanied Edmund Hillary to the summit in 1953, an avalanche at the Khumbu Icefall above base camp claims the lives of 16 Sherpas. Phurba and his colleagues are forced to reappraise their attitudes to the economic, cultural, spiritual and security aspects of their livelihood.
