Our Score
The further adventures of Lightning McQueen show Pixar's favourite boy racer (again voiced by Owen Wilson) feeling his age, his pole position under threat from leaner, cleaner machines and jittery sponsors on the verge of pulling the (spark) plug. In order to keep pace with the upstart leading pack, Lightning puts himself at the mercy of feisty young trainer Cruz Ramirez (comedian Cristela Alonzo), whose modern methodical approach clashes with his rubber-burning old-school ways. After the last film's stuttering pit stop and cluttered spy spoof subplot, director Brian Fee gets the franchise back on track by making motor racing the focus again. Other familiar faces (or should that be fenders?) are on hand to flesh out a well-constructed story with genuine heart, and a full tank of funny moments. This being Pixar, there is the usual attention to detail, both visual and verbal, and neat little touches to make the audience smile, not least Lightning's newly installed dashboard computer Hamilton (voiced by Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton). A welcome return to the winners' podium.
