Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Shot under the smokescreen title of The Woods to disguise The Blair Witch Project connection, director Adam Wingard's belated second sequel is fundamentally a mainstream remake of the original landmark horror, only with supernatural acrobatics added for extra finale suspense. Twenty years after his sister Heather went missing in Maryland's Black Hills Forest, James (James Allen McCune) and a bunch of sceptical film-making students venture into the same woods for answers and closure. Recording everything subjectively as per the "found footage" norm, they encounter endless night, epic time loss and a menacing presence as the legend of the backwoods sorceress exerts its terrifying grip once more. It's confidently and stylishly directed by Wingard (You're Next, The Guest), with visual references to the spartan 1999 shocker used to deceive and deflect expectation, and the standard scares are plentiful. There's really nothing that special here, but an upgraded arsenal of equipment (drone camera, GPS, etc) produces a far more visceral experience.
