Jennie McAlpine has revealed that her character Fiz Stape is to argue with Roy Cropper (David Neilson) in the wake of Hayley’s (Julie Hesmondhalgh) death.
After Fiz learns that Anna Windass (Debbie Rush) was privy to Hayley’s plans to end her own life, she vents her anger on the bereaved café owner.
“Fiz is jealous because Anna knew what Hayley was planning. So she feels a bit left out. Fiz’s reaction is actually quite selfish and she gets angry with Roy,” said the actress.
On the scene where Fiz confronts Roy about what’s been going on, McAlpine added: “They really do fall out. But it’s good that the writers chose to do something a bit different. What we don’t get is Fiz just saying how sad she is that it’s happened.”
Julie Hesmondhalgh’s final episodes will be screened on Monday 20 January as Hayley puts in motion plans to end her life as she becomes further debilitated by pancreatic cancer. But McAlpine insisted that Hayley’s death is not the end of the story:
“During the funeral and beyond, the big question will be: what will Roy do without Hayley, particularly in the light of what’s happened and the part he’s played in it?”
