Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

There's double the Muay Thai mayhem in this all-action sequel, which offers the tantalising prospect of a returning Tony Jaa teaming up with female action star JeeJa Yanin (Chocolate). Once again Jaa finds his simple rural existence shattered when an unscrupulous trader steals his beloved elephant. But this time he finds himself on the wrong side of the law - not to mention Yanin and her equally lethal twin - when he is implicated in the perpetrator's murder. This was the first Thai action movie to be shot in 3D, so there's no shortage of weapons careering into the camera and up-close CGI carnage to provide distraction from the increasingly loopy pachyderm-in-peril plot. There's also a lack of novelty about some of the later fight scenes, and RZA (The Man with the Iron Fists) is far from convincing as Jaa's ultimate adversary. However, for the most part, director Prachya Pinkaew marshals a satisfying (if less bone-crunching) follow-up to his original film, with the standout sequence being an entertainingly ludicrous 12-minute chase involving a motorcycle gang that allows Jaa to demonstrate his tremendous agility, ability and daring.
