Phil Collinson interview - April 2007

He's the man who gets the show made. Producer Phil Collinson's job is to make Doctor Who happen - to be as creative as the writers while getting the most out of the budget.

Three series in, you'd think he'd be getting used to it. But if anything expectations are higher than ever and for the new season, he and the team have been working to bring us more of the same - only better.

What's different about the new series?

The biggest change in the third series is the arrival of a new companion for the Doctor. That's really the focus, certainly of the first half of the season, with the two of them getting to know each other and the audience getting to know what makes Martha tick.

The fabulous thing about bringing a new companion into the Tardis is that we get to see the Doctor's world through a brand new pair of eyes. And it's a different dynamic this time: the Doctor is still missing Rose.

Do we see as much of Martha's family?
We go back and meet them right the way through all 13 episodes, we're nipping backwards and forwards as we did with Rose. I think that's one of the biggest successes of the new Doctor Who, that we give the companions a life. We ground them in the present day, they feel like real people.

What about the places Martha goes and the aliens she sees?
I hope the new series is more ambitious, that we push things further, that the monsters become more elaborate.

Probably the best example is how for episode two we filmed in the Globe Theatre. There's a great shot that sweeps right down from the top of the Globe right down onto the stage and we had thousands of screaming extras - partly through the magic of CGI - all watching a Shakespearean comedy. We very much wanted to show it how it really was - like a modern-day rock concert, how whipped up the audience is.
