The character has been on quite the journey. Wife Moira (Natalie J Robb) was wrongly imprisoned for manslaughter and human trafficking, after two bodies were found on their homestead Butler's Farm. She was framed by Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), who was being blackmailed by Joe Tate (Ned Porteous).

Their ulterior motive was to gain control of Butler's, forcing Moira into an impossible situation where she had to sell the farm. Cain was then worried about the financial impact it would have on his family, and established a new agricultural venture at Wishing Well Cottage.

Upon Moira's release from prison, it became clear that Cain was fearful of their sex life being impacted by the side effects of treatment, and wondered whether their marriage could survive the changes.

Despite her insistence that nothing would change, he also considered the potential incontinence issues, and decided that he wasn't going to go ahead with the surgery.

It wasn't until village stalwart Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) shed new light on the situation that he began to consider the positives.

Pollard explained that he also had doubts over his future amid his Parkinson's disease, and that he would do anything to have a family unit like the Dingles.

Cain realised that he had to continue fighting, and in today's episode, headed to the hospital.

Sons Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) and Isaac (Bobby Dunsmuir) were terrified about what would happen to him, as Moira desperately reassured them that everything would be ok and that he would survive. Kyle was shaken when he overheard his dad ask the nurse to remind his family that he loved them, should he not wake up after the procedure.

Fortunately, a matter of time later, a doctor informed Moira and the boys that Cain’s operation was a success.

However, as Cain was taken back to the side ward, he realised how much his life had already began to change. Moira excitedly spoke about their future and what it could entail, but he was more focussed on the catheter that a nurse was fixing to him.

How will Cain deal with the recovery period, and will he be able to take time to look after himself?
